Lyrical Exercise: Jay-Z, ‘Why I Love You’

I always say a significant measure of how good an album is how many different songs become your “favorite song on the album”. While I won’t disagree with anyone saying ‘Watch The Throne’ wasn’t what it could be, it had some awesome re-listen value and classic tracks. ‘Why I Love You’ was my favorite song on WTT for the first two weeks of the album release excluding the bonus tracks (Primetime, The Joy). Something about the chipmunked-chorus and dope beat just got me real good. Today’s Lyrical Exercise features the second half of Jay-Z’s first verse in ‘Why I Love You’. Enjoy!

Favorite Parts:

1) The Easter metaphor referring to the fact that his career is “Jesus-like”

2) “Fuck you squares, the circle got smaller…”

The Lyrical Exercise comes in at 00:46 in the clip below.

But I can make ’em put their hands in the sky for you
We waiting for the fireworks like July 4th
Get fly more, get high more, cry boy, why for?
When the grief is over, beef is over
I’ll be fly when Easter’s over
I tried to teach niggas how to be kings
And all they ever wanted to be was soldiers
So the love is gone ’til blood is drawn
So we no longer wear the same uniform
Fuck you squares, the circle got smaller
The castle got bigger, the walls got taller
And truth be told after all that said
Niggas still got love for you
