Lyrical Exercise: Dr. Dre, ‘Still D.R.E.’

Today’s Lyrical Exercise features Dr. Dre on the classic track ‘Still D.R.E.’ from his sextuple platinum album “2001”. “2001” is definitely in The Audio Dope’s top 10 favorite hip-hop albums of all-time. This Lyrical Exercise features one of the many dopeee Dr. Dre verses on his second solo album which was released in 1999.

Favorite parts of the Lyrical Exercise:

1) At least twice a day I say to someone “Wake up in the A.M., compose a beat”. Something about the way Dre delivers that line over the beat gets me so amped.

2) Dope flow and rhyme scheme during lines 1-4. Most “2001”fans probably have rapped those lines over a hundred times in their lives. If not, never too late to get started. Here’s today’s Lyrical Exercise.

The lyrics we’re talking about start at the 1:38 minute mark…

Still, I stay close to the heat
And even when I was close to defeat, I rose to my feet
My life’s like a soundtrack I wrote to the beat
Treat my rap like Cali weed, I smoke til I sleep
Wake up in the A.M., compose a beat
I bring the fire till you’re soaking in your seat
It’s not a fluke, it’s been tried, I’m the truth
Since “Turn Out the Lights” from the World Class Wreckin’ Cru
